the Scottish Connection
The 'Scotch-Irish' brought to their new homes in the Appalachian hollers their hardiness, stubbornness, strong generational family ties, and their ballads and fiddle tunes. The latter two developed a life of their own as they meandered down through the centuries and met up with the guitar and banjo.
The music for these performances was recorded specially by Jack Beck and Tyler Hughes. Beck is a native Scot now resident in SW VA, where he frequently gets together with Hughes (a native of Big Stone Gap VA) to explore the Scottish Appalachian musical connections. Beck also presents a weekly Celtic music radio show on WETS, WEHC and Alive Radio. On the special recordings they play Mrs Mcleod's Reel (Hop High Ladies in Appalachia) and an Appalachian waltz.
